Dr. Craig Sommer has been caring for the downtown Colorado Springs business and professional community since 1992.  He truly is your downtown dentist located in the Plaza of the Rockies building at Colorado and Tejon.

Dr. Sommer has lived in both the city and rural areas of Calfornia. Starting in Brentwood, in the Los Angeles area, he attended UCLA dental school.  

Following graduation he received additional training in a general practice residency program at the Los Angeles Wadsworth Veterans Administration Hospital .

Dr. Sommer returned home to Colorado after practicing in Northern California for over 10 years. Dr. Sommer's goal was to return to Colorado Springs ever since attending a Boy Scout Jamboree here as a youngster.

Warning Label on the back of a container of mercury based filling material sold under the name Tytin by Kerr Dental. This was the label on a ten plus year old package of the filling material. Concerns about the material are not new. Look below for the current health warning information contained in the current Material Safety Data Sheet as of April 2009.

• Ingestion: May cause Neurotoxic (nerve damaging effects)
• Nephrotoxic (kidney damaging)effects
• Inhalation: May cause Bronchiolitis (in bronchiolitis the airway becomes obstructed from the swelling of the bronchiole walls )
• Pneumonitis (pneumonitis is inflammation of the lungs due to breathing in a foreign substance)
• Pulmonary Edema (pulmonary edema is an abnormal build up of fluid in the lungs, which leads to swelling)

Acute Exposure: Inhalation of mercury vapor can cause cough, fever, nausea and vomiting. May cause nausea, vomiting, kidney damage and nerve effects.

Chronic Exposure: Inhalation
of high concentrations of mercury vapor over a long period may cause mercurialism.

Chronic Exposure: Symptoms include central nervous system (CNS) disorders.

Findings are extremely variable and include tremors, salivation, stomatitis, loosening of teeth, blue lines on gums, pain and numbness in extremities.

Effects and Hazards of Ingestion:
Neurotoxic/Nephrotoxic.

Effects and Hazards of Eye Contact: Irritant. Acute Exposure: Contact may cause irritation.

Mercury is corrosive and may cause corneal injury or burns.

Chronic Exposure: Mercury may be deposited in the lens of the eye, causing visual disturbances.

Effects and Hazards of Skin Contact: Irritant/Sensitizer/Neurotoxin/ Nephrotoxin.

Acute Exposure: May cause redness and irritation.
Chronic Exposure: Possible sensitization,
dermatitis and swelling.

Mercury may be absorbed through the skin causing urinary problems.
